千利休が好んで何度も使ったといわれる釜で利休百会に用いられたことで、この名があります。霰とは表面の粒々の突起の事で鋳型成形時に1粒1粒型を凹ませ鋳出します。釻付は鬼面。蓋つまみは菊花。
